From Photo to Keepsake
Have you ever wondered how a simple photo can become a permanent, handcrafted wood engraving? As someone who has a passion for photography, I understand the need for keepsakes, which is why I focus on this unique way of preserving your moments in stunning detail. I’ll take you behind the scenes of my entire process. From photo preparation to delivery, so you can understand how your keepsake comes to life.
Step 1: Choosing the Right Material
The first step is selecting the perfect base for your engraving: basswood plywood sheets. I use this material because it engraves cleanly, captures fine details, and ensures your image translates beautifully onto wood. Using high-quality material is crucial for a sharp, lasting result that stands the test of time.
Pro tip: Clear, unaltered photos work best. Shadows, filters, or low-resolution images can reduce detail in the engraving.
Step 2: Editing Your Photo for Maximum Detail
Once I receive your photo, I carefully edit and enhance the image to highlight key features. This ensures that the engraving process can bring out the finest details. Every adjustment is made to optimize contrast, sharpness, and overall clarity, without altering the essence of the original image.
Visual tip: Photos with natural light and minimal shadows provide the best results.
Below are some examples of shadows in images, which make them appear darker and less crisp. Pictures with heavy shadows will take away critical details from the faces in those images.

Below are engraved images in well-lit environments. Taking pictures in a well-lit environment is the best option for the best result.

Step 3: Test Engraving on Scrap Wood
Before committing to your final piece, I perform a test engraving on scrap wood of the same material. This step allows me to fine-tune settings like laser intensity and engraving speed. Testing ensures that when your photo is scaled to its final size, the details remain crisp and consistent.
Step 4: Engraving the Final Piece
After confirming the settings, I start engraving your photo. During this stage, I often capture behind-the-scenes content, including video clips and notes that may become part of a blog or story about your image. This dual focus lets me document the creation while ensuring your engraving gets the attention it deserves.
Fun fact: Watching the image emerge layer by layer is one of the most satisfying parts of the process. You can check out some of the videos here or go to my Facebook page here.
Step 5: Framing and Adding Personal Touches
Once the engraving is complete, I glue the wood piece into its frame and allow it to dry thoroughly. Afterward, I add a final personal touch: engraving a QR code and my logo onto the back of the easel frame. The QR code links directly to my website, connecting your keepsake to its origin and story.
Step 6: Packaging and Shipping
The last step is delivering your finished keepsake safely. I carefully package the framed engraving in a bubble-protected envelope, include a thank-you card, and attach the shipping label. From there, it’s off to your doorstep, ready to be unboxed, gifted, or displayed.
